Inspector Schmidt The Ebbing places the player in the role of Valentin Schmidt, a civil servant who arrives on holiday in the seaside town of Hafstedt around 1870, but his plans are altered by local events. The discovery of Bente Hansen’s body near the telegraph station prompts Schmidt to investigate the circumstances of the death, which requires exploring the surroundings of Hafstedt. Interaction with the inhabitants occurs through a dialogue system that allows you to gather information, uncover secrets of the townspeople and, ultimately, confront those suspected of involvement or cover-ups. Gameplay involves searching for physical evidence in various locations; this involves using special mechanics to inspect rooms and check items such as furniture for hidden clues.

Some information is hidden behind combination and number puzzles integrated into the game world. Additionally, access to certain locations requires the use of stealth mechanics to advance without detection, which is especially true in areas such as the local swamps. Character skills influence the results of specific challenges through skill checks based on dice rolls. Gamers control the development of the character by allocating points to improve selected abilities as they level up.

Resource gathering is part of the gameplay loop, allowing you to craft items that can aid in investigations or influence the results of skill checks. The decisions the user makes during interactions shape the development of the central plot. The game includes options to customize the experience, offering different modes that change the level of direct instructions given to the gamer and allow modification of the difficulty for stealth episodes or skill checks. The main goal remains the same: solve the mystery of Hansen, investigate the unexplained symbols appearing in Hafstedt, and establish the origin of the unusual telegraph signals.
