The Diary

The Diary presents its narrative through the contents of several different documents related to a missing person case. The story unfolds as the player interacts with a personal journal, two separate investigative notebooks, and a planner journal. Progressing through these materials requires solving a puzzle on each page, which allows the page to be flipped.

This mechanic reveals fragments of the story from multiple perspectives, allowing players to piece together information about the central event. Within The Diary, gamers piece together what happened by arranging disparate chat logs and searching for information in books. This involves moving the camera to capture past images and rearranging elements on a confusing timeline. Other activities include playing musical instruments and operating a doll-catching machine.

A key part of the gameplay involves identifying the owner of each document from a cast of six characters, each interpreting the same event from their own perspective. The full picture of the incident is reconstructed in discontinuous time and space. The narrative introduces many plot twists that challenge the understanding of the facts presented. Resolving doubts arising from the books requires analysis of the available information and deep reasoning. The goal is to uncover the circumstances of the case, the answer to which may lie in the past or the present.
