Under The Yoke

Under The Yoke is a medieval life simulator developed by Priory Games, in which you will find yourself in Norman England as a serf peasant with one acre of land and a simple cottage. You will lead several generations of your family through 250 years of authentic medieval history (1085-1335), managing their survival and advancement in feudal society. Each character has their own traits of mind, body and spirit, which determine their abilities, relationships and access to unique events throughout their life.

The gameplay focuses on satisfying basic needs such as taste (thanks to 50+ authentic medieval ingredients), rest, faith and social connections, as well as mastering essential medieval skills including farming, herbalism, cooking, carpentry and animal husbandry. You will raise livestock: cows, sheep, pigs and chickens, each of which provides different resources and requires special care. Village life extends beyond your manor through political participation at annual Hallmote meetings, where you can vote in elections, serve on jurors, and form strategic alliances with neighboring families.

The feudal system plays a central role as you negotiate with your lord for more land, better housing, and potential freedom from serfdom. Advancing from serf to freeman unlocks new rights such as bread baking and forest hunting, accurately reflecting medieval social mobility. A dynamic event system featuring hundreds of unique scenarios ensures that each playthrough is fresh, and takes into account the real historical events that shaped medieval England, making your family’s story part of a larger tapestry of history.
