Voor de kroon takes place in the distant 13th century, as the High Middle Ages were drawing to a close. Following the betrayal of the Roman Empire, the Netherlands is experiencing hard times. As Count Floris, you must enter the battle on the lands of the Netherlands and reclaim the throne. Take advantage of your enemies' weaknesses and win the war. The castle of Holland will be painted in the colors of your banners. In Voor de kroon, battles take place in real time. The player takes command of an army of up to 600 soldiers. They can be organized into five regiments.

It's important to look after the well-being of the army and your kingdom, so some regiments can be sent on reconnaissance missions to gain resources and boost morale. You can choose which unit to attack first. The army consists of cavalry, archers, and infantry. You can participate in battles on horseback or on foot. Horses provide maneuverability on the battlefield and help you quickly convey orders to your men. You need to be careful, as an enemy soldier can knock the leader off his mount, resulting in defeat. While not mounted, you can directly participate in battles and carve up enemies. Weather mechanics are present. When planning an attack, consider the season. Rain and fog reduce visibility. Character customization and the creation of your own heraldry are available.
