In Road To Empress, the gameplay takes place in the Chinese imperial court, where the heroine's survival depends on the player's decisions. The plot comprises over 100 branching stories, emerging as a result of the player's choices and actions at key moments. The character's subsequent fate depends on their resourcefulness and ability to navigate tense situations. This interactive choice mechanic guides the protagonist through a series of intrigues, passions, and a thirst for revenge in a dangerous political environment.

The main goal in Road To Empress is to win the title of Empress by navigating the machinations of the court. To do this, players must forge alliances with certain figures and eliminate others who pose a threat. The player builds relationships with influential ministers and repulses enemies to consolidate their power. Every action directly impacts the path to the throne, leading to an ending that reflects all actions taken throughout the game. The gameplay challenges the player to confront complex moral dilemmas and determine how far the heroine is willing to go to achieve her goals.

Within the palace walls, the protagonist must uncover hidden plots and carefully guarded secrets of its inhabitants. This project explores the personal connection between a prince and a bard, the princess's secret affair with her chosen one, and the relationship between an official and an attractive servant. Other stories explore rumors of ghosts haunting certain parts of the palace. All these discoveries are woven into the main struggle for the throne, revealing hidden desires simmering beneath the guise of imperial protocol.
