Description
When a developer works on a game on his own, he often has the opportunity to implement ideas that large studios consider too risky. The Twelve Boxes project, created and released by the author under the nickname pashooter in 2026, is a great example of this approach. This is a very interesting mix of genres where a logical puzzle meets a hidden object simulation and real psychological horror. At first glance, the idea seems very simple. There are twelve mysterious boxes in front of you and your task is to open them all. But what starts as an ordinary calm logic game very quickly turns into a real test for your nerves. The game does not scare you with cheap tricks or monsters, it scares you with the fact that you yourself do not know what to expect from the next box that you are going to open.
The gameplay is built around a slow and very thoughtful exploration. You will have to turn the objects in your hands, examine them from all sides, look for hidden buttons and secret mechanisms. This is a full-fledged simulation of the process of solving a complex box where every detail has its own meaning. The mechanics of finding hidden objects here are woven directly into the puzzles themselves. You are not just looking for things from a list, but trying to understand which item will help you move forward. Some solutions require you to remember what you saw before or combine several objects together.
The game requires full concentration, so it is good to play it in silence when no one distracts you from the process of solving the next puzzle. The atmosphere is the strongest side of this project. With each new mystery solved, the room around you begins to change, the sounds become more disturbing, and the feeling of danger gradually increases. You understand that you are approaching the finale, but at the same time you are becoming more and more afraid to take the next step. This is a very subtle and competent approach to the horror genre that works much better than simple screams from the darkness. If you like smart games that make your brain work and at the same time know how to create a really tense atmosphere, then Twelve Boxes will be a good choice for you. It is short but very rich and leaves behind strong emotions that will linger in your head long after you finish playing.
