The Centennial Case A Shijima Story

The Centennial Case A Shijima Story — is an Full Motion Video adventure game in which most of the action takes place in the form of video sequences with actors. The project was developed by Square Enix. The protagonist of the game is Japanese writer Haruka Kagami, who specializes in detective stories. A woman takes on the task of solving a series of murders involving members of the powerful Shijima family. Crimes were committed for a hundred years. The first murder took place in 1922, followed by others in 1972 and 2022.

The mysterious Scarlet Camellia is believed to be behind all of these murders in order to obtain the Fruit of Youth that the Shijima family allegedly possesses. The Centennial Case A Shijima Story is a detective adventure. Each case begins with an extensive videotape showing the crime. It hides all the clues and facts that eventually allow you to point to the criminal. This is assisted by the Clues Collection interface, which allows you to manipulate the footage and find clues in it. The second stage is deduction, where the player uses the collected facts and evidence to develop a hypothesis, placing these elements on the board to create a logical sequence of events. The last stage is the formulation of the accusation and the identification of the culprit. Our conclusions are not always correct, and in this section we can check if we were right.

If we make a mistake, we will see the wrong ending, after which we can return to the previous stages and try again. The deduction is complicated by the fact that in each of the three time periods the same actors play different roles. Therefore, the victim in one case may be the perpetrator in another. The Centennial Case A Shijima Story only offers a single player mode. The setting of the game is unusual in that it mainly consists of FMV sequences filmed like traditional series and films, i.e. with actors and sets. These video scenes were directed by Yasuhito Tachibana, who is the producer of the Netflix series The Naked Director.
