Eyes in the Dark

Gearbox has announced a brand new atmospheric platformer called Eyes in the Dark. The black and white visuals are very similar to old games like Closure and Inside. However, compared to these relatively dark and moody games, the art is more detailed and playful. The trailer for Eyes in the Dark shows gameplay in which a young character fights enemies with a flashlight. It seems that the light emitted by the flashlight is the main way to deal damage to monsters. The flashlight seems to have other uses besides damaging enemies. The game’s protagonist explores the dark corners of the mansion, which light up as soon as the flashlight touches the dark areas, almost like the fog of war mechanic.

And your little flashlight can even be upgraded at certain points in the game. In the trailer, we see the player testing out the Globe Bulb upgrade, which allows you to shoot balls of light that explode into smaller balls of light. We then see the hero shoot balls of light at jellyfish-like enemies. Obviously, there will also be some kind of mechanic in the game, due to which the mansion that you explore in this game will constantly change. However, it’s currently unclear if this will mean the game will have roguelike properties, or if certain actions you take in the mansion will change the overall layout of the world. Finally, we also got a tiny piece of information about the plot. At the end of the trailer, a cutscene with the text save your family appears, indicating the reason why the character explores the dark mansion in the first place.
