Shadows of Destruction

Shadows of Destruction is a strong contender for the title of most evil strategy game, if such an award were to be given. While the player takes on the role of a dark god in hopes of bringing the world underground and bringing about an age of darkness, the forces of Good organize a resistance in an attempt to drive back the shadow and save the world. The game models a living, breathing world of warring nations, burgeoning cities, and powerful figures, each with their own personality and goals. The player’s mission is to use stealth, espionage, and other covert operations to keep their agents out of sight until the time is right to strike and achieve victory.

NPCs actions are dictated by their personal motivations and assigned roles. They will travel the map, carrying out missions that range from simple ones like taking out a group of bandits or defeating an orc invasion, to hunting down the player’s agents in their quest to save the world. Diplomatic relations between the various nations and cults are also based on the interactions between their members, so world events are as much influenced by their state of mind as they are by politics and economics. Thus, in the early and mid-game, you act as a puppeteer, setting the stage for the final invasion and manipulating characters into acting against their interests through the tricks and sadistic abilities unique to each god.

In the late game, gameplay Shadows of Destruction can change dramatically depending on which god the player chooses. The first god available manifests in the world as a giant snake, more powerful than any army or hero. He can destroy the world single-handedly, or die in agony if cornered and killed by the forces of Good. Other gods can turn the nations of the world against each other until they are all corrupted, ending the world with a whimper rather than a bang.
