The Roottrees are Dead is a gripping detective adventure game set in 1998 where players investigate complex family dynamics following a tragic private jet crash that killed the wealthy Roottree sisters and their parents. As an investigator armed with a dial-up modem, you must piece together the true family tree of the billion-dollar Roottree corporation by analyzing photographs, books, articles, and various clues. The game features a nostalgic late 90s computer interface, complete with hand-drawn illustrations by board game artist Henning Ludvigsen and a 3D living room perspective that ties all the puzzle pieces together.
Originally a browser game from Global Game Jam 2023, this enhanced Steam version includes quality of life improvements, remastered audio with voiced cinematics, and a bonus chapter, The Roottrees are Dead, revealing new scandals within America’s largest maple candy empire. Players must make logical decisions to correctly place family members on the tree, with puzzles becoming increasingly difficult as the options become fewer.

Now available in Simplified Chinese! Hello Genealogists! We’re excited to announce that as of today The Roottrees are Dead has been translated into Simplified Chinese! This is our most ambitious translation yet, as there is less overlap between Chinese and English than there was with French, German, and Spanish. In addition to translating all of the search results, we’ve revisited everything with text. This includes names on the tree, and evidence such as print advertisements and stickers on album covers! It has been fun to watch the project come together, seeing familiar art with an entirely new look to it. Now we’re happy to share it with you just in time for the Steam Winter Sale. As always, if you find any issues related to the translation please post them in our discord’s bug channel. It might take a bit more effort to fix as we’ll need to consult our translators, but we are committed to making sure that the game works well in every language option.
