Hearts of Iron IV Thunder at Our Gates is the latest expansion for Paradox Interactive’s grand strategy wargame, focusing on the art of defensive warfare and desperate last stands. Developed by Paradox Development Studio for release in 2026, this strategy simulation RTS open world action DLC adds new mechanics for building fortifications, conducting tactical withdrawals, and launching counterattacks. You take command of nations that face overwhelming odds, such as the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa, Finland during the Winter War, or France in 1940. The latest version of the game introduces a new Fortification Planner, allowing you to design layered defensive lines with bunkers, anti tank obstacles, and artillery emplacements.

Strategy depth is increased with a new morale system that affects unit performance when defending their homeland. Simulation realism includes supply line vulnerabilities and partisan activity behind enemy lines. RTS elements are enhanced with new combat events like urban street fighting and bridge demolition. Open world maps now feature more detailed terrain, including forests, swamps, and urban ruins that affect unit movement and combat. Action moments arise from desperate last stands where your units can hold out for weeks against overwhelming forces. New focus trees for Poland, Finland, and the Baltic states offer alternate history paths. For fans of deep military strategy, you can download the game on PC.
